Images and history of California's Covered Bridges
California's Covered Bridges, once numbering around 50, were primarily concentrated in three regions: the Gold Rush country, northwestern counties (Humboldt and Siskiyou), and the Santa Cruz area. These bridges, built using plentiful local timber like redwood, served various purposes beyond crossings, including community gatherings and romantic rendezvous. Today, fewer than ten of these historic structures remain, due to factors like the introduction of iron and steel bridges and the inability of older, smaller bridges to handle modern traffic.
