The 1989 Joel Whittemore Covered Bridge is located in Linn County, Oregon. The 20-foot-long pedestrian bridge was constructed by Ben Dahlenburg's high school Building Trades Class students of Sweet Home High School.
This 8-foot-wide Howe truss walking bridge was permanently moved to Clover Memorial Park at 1st Street and Santiam Highway in downtown Sweet Home, a historic logging town.
The small bridge started life on the back of a mobile trailer being hauled to parades to promote covered bridge preservation. Between parades and civic events, it was parked between the Weddle and Dahlenburg covered bridges in Sankey Park behind Sweet Home High School.
It's named after Joel Whittemore, a New Hampshire man who bought the bridge and then decided not to claim it. Sweet Home Parks maintenance manager Don Menear needed a bridge and contacted Whittemore, who agreed to donate the bridge to the City of Sweet Home if it was named after him.
